Bcci Strict New Fitness Mandate Test : Borrow Rugby's Test

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has recently introduced a new fitness test for its centrally contracted players, known as the Bronco Test. This test is an addition to the existing fitness assessments, which include the Yo-Yo Test and the 2-kilometer time trial. The introduction of the Bronco Test is a strategic move to improve the aerobic endurance and overall fitness levels of cricketers, especially fast bowlers, who were found to be lacking in running-based conditioning.

Bronco Test Details 🏃‍♂️

Originally a rugby drill, the Bronco Test is a high-intensity shuttle run designed to measure a player's stamina and cardiovascular conditioning. Here’s how it works:

  • The Drill: A player runs a series of shuttles, starting with a 20-meter run, followed by a 40-meter run, and then a 60-meter run. This sequence of three runs constitutes one set.

  • The Goal: Players must complete five continuous sets without a break, covering a total distance of 1200 meters.

  • Benchmark: The target time for Indian cricketers to complete the test is 6 minutes.

The decision to implement this test came after concerns were raised about the fitness of some fast bowlers during the five-Test series in England, where only Mohammed Siraj managed to play all five matches. The test's introduction was suggested by the team's strength and conditioning coach, Adrian le Roux, with support from head coach Gautam Gambhir, who wants players to focus more on running rather than just spending time in the gym.

Other Mandatory Fitness Tests 📝

The Bronco Test supplements two other crucial fitness tests that players must pass for selection:

  • Yo-Yo Test: This is an intermittent recovery test where a player runs between two markers placed 20 meters apart, with the speed and duration of the shuttle runs increasing with each level. The minimum passing score for the Indian team is typically set at 17.1.

  • 2-Kilometer Time Trial: This test assesses sustained endurance. The benchmark times vary based on the player's role:

    • Fast Bowlers: Must complete the 2 km in 8 minutes and 15 seconds.

    • Batsmen, Wicketkeepers, and Spinners: Must complete the 2 km in 8 minutes and 30 seconds.

The combination of the Yo-Yo Test, the 2-kilometer time trial, and the new Bronco Test provides the BCCI with a comprehensive framework to evaluate a player's all-around fitness, ensuring they are not just strong but also capable of withstanding the physical demands of modern cricket.
